- ِAbstract: Remote sensing techniques are a powerful way to acquire knowledge about our planet, the solar system, and the universe. This talk will survey a number of remote sensing procedures with a focus on radio occultation method and monostatic surface scattering experiments. The former is used for study of planetary atmospheres, whereas the latter is used to estimate the roughness and composition of planetary surfaces. The results of these procedures help in the construction of the geologic history of various bodies in the solar system.

- Dr. George Whitesides, Executive Director, National Space Society, USA

- Dr. George T. Whitesides is the Executive Director of the National Space Society, the largest space advocacy group dedicated to human spaceflight and the creation of a spacefaring civilization. NSS has approximately 20,000 member-subscribers and more than 70 chapters around the world. Founded in 1974 by Apollo program leader Dr. Werner von Braun, NSS promotes change through educational projects, conferences, mass media, and policy advisement to leaders in government and industry.
  
  A former Fulbright program scholar, Whitesides received his graduate degree in remote sensing and GIS from Cambridge University, and his undergraduate degree in public and international affairs from Princeton University.
  
  Whitesides began his career at Orbital Sciences Corporation as special assistant to the president. Since then, he has served as Vice President of Marketing for Zero Gravity Corporation, a private space-tourism company, and Director of Marketing for Blastoff Corporation, a space-experience company funded by film and technology leaders.
  
  Whitesides serves as a member of COMSTAC, the official advisory committee for the Department of Transportation’s Space Transportation division. He was selected by Space News as one of twelve ‘People to Watch’. He has served on the Board of Trustees of Princeton University, and currently serves on the board of the Space Generation Foundation.
  
  With Loretta Hidalgo, Whitesides is the co-founder of Yuri's Night, a global celebration of space that includes thousands of celebrants each year around the world. With Rick Tumlinson, he is the co-founder of Permission to Dream, a global space-education program focused on astronomy, with local chapters in 16 countries.
  
  Whitesides maintains an active speaking schedule, appearing at a variety of conferences and events. An active writer and commentator on space and exploration issues, Whitesides has been interviewed on MTV, NBC, CNN, Fox News, NPR, VOA, and many other print and television outlets.
  
  Whitesides is a licensed private pilot and certified parabolic flight coach for Zero Gravity Corporation. In the summer of 2005, Whitesides and his wife Loretta Hidalgo announced that they had arranged to fly to space together onboard Virgin Galactic’s suborbital spaceflight service.
